Re: [Yasmin_discussions] NEW MEDIA: USER'S BEHAVIOUR, SOCIAL SYSTEMS, AND THE BODY POLITIC

Hello Teoman, and all,

You describe how commercial tools can be used for art by saying: "New  media tools are mostly commercial tools that can also be used for artistic things".

I would like to point on how commercial tools are interconnected with art when it comes to share the same diffusion space, the TV for example. This is when economy affects visual forms on screen. For example, a single on-screen horizontal line showing SMS messages was not enough: space is always available to insert more horizontal lines for scrolling SMS messages. Thus, one line is reserved for private messages; a second one for the news; a third one is dedicated to star-related news; a special space is reserved for matching tests; another space is used to show pictures and names of ringtones that could be downloaded to mobile phones; a space is reserved to enable special song requests; another space is left to display nominated candidates for whom people could vote; and yet another special space is used for playing games and winning! Consequently, the screen is covered with SMS messages of all sorts.

However, one of the things done to cope with those spaces and lines is to use anamorphic framing, leaving black spaces for SMS messages and topics. Music channels have become famous for this phenomenon since they are the channels that use SMS strategies the most. Nowadays, a video-clip director tends to use anamorphic framing to satisfy the SMS phenomenon.

This is how economy and networking affect ad strategies, which in turn affect the aesthetic choices of the screen's composition.

Ricardo

It is sometimes very nice to answer questions
New  media tools are mostly commercial tools
that can also be used for artistic things, with their secondary
artistic handling possibilities..  because, some softwares have some
similar attractive other possibilities to create new things...
cameras for instance have wide varieties of use or handling possibilities
such secondary handlings may then become like inventions
or tricky loopholes...  Another mega tool of this sort was AMIGA
computers, pc's new ones, rebooted old models refurpished now,
new softwares, new phones, new musics, noisemusics, new jazz
and new hi tech cameras, not for sale abstractions, dekonstrukt items,
anarchic art fields, fluxus arts
